Horses are the eternal “passion” of the Turkmens; for many centuries, these people highly valued good horses, moreover, considered them their most faithful friends. Today horses are one of the country’s most valuable attractions. Akhal-Teke horses, “fast as the wind”, are the world fame of Turkmenistan, a completely unique breed. A lean brownish-red whirlwind with a graceful “swan” neck and chiseled “dry” legs, for all its incredibly beauty and oriental temperament, the horses are surprisingly resilient.
The colorful “Turkmen Horse” festival, held every last Sunday in April, is the best opportunity to get acquainted with the unique breed and see it in action by attending numerous equestrian festivals, which include both sporting competitions and national games using horses.
